Here's #3 - "Twilight Prophet". This one seems to be the fan favorite of the bunch, and it was certainly a lot of fun to work on.
It depicts the moment the hero decides to sacrifice his eyes to gain greater vision - a sight beyond mortal sight, in order to confront an enemy that has the power to destroy all who look upon it.
The idea being that those who are less distracted by what they physically see may gain greater insight and understanding into spiritual realms.
This takes place after the hero has already sacrificed his heart to a witch so that he may become protected against any and all physical attack, and realizing even that would not be enough to defeat his enemy (Gaia’s Blessing). Obviously don't try either of these things at home.
The painting, and the whole series really - took inspiration from a song called 'The Lake' by Bathory.
Lyrics
“The one eyed old man told me that the face that I will see
Has paralyzed a thousand brave men sure of victory
I cannot fight blindfolded and I’d freeze if I should see.
So I need to sacrifice my eyes to see all from within.”
